WE DON'T NEED MORE SCHOOLS FOR NOW: By Dr. Torngee Malu

WE DON'T NEED MORE SCHOOLS FOR NOW, WE ONLY NEED TO MAKE THE ONES WE HAVE BETTER AND BIGGER. 

 
Yesterday I visited my Secondary School Government College Makurdi. 

Benue State Under my mentor SiByr Aper Aku did one thing that is so great, He had primary schools in most villages, Benue has one of the highest numbers of primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. We also have Technical schools in all Zones of the state, colleges of education and a polytechnics, A State University thanks to Reverend Fr. Adasu of blessed memory and a Federal University of Agriculture. 

The schools we have can adequately cater for the educational needs of the state. What we need now is to restructure and equip these schools to make them better. 

1. We need to ensure that Teachers are well trained and their welfare is guaranteed . 

2.We also need to increase the number of Teachers in most of the institutions so the problem is that of lack of manpower not lack of schools.

3. Our schools need to be renovated and equipped to make the learning environment conducive for Children and Teachers.

4. Our educational systems need to be restructured to be skill based. This is the only way we can ensure jobs after graduation. 

5. Not every one needs to go to the University. We should develop our vocational education so that people can start earning money without having to go to these schools. We need more vocational schools. 

5. Some schools that do not meet minimum standards should be scrapped or merged . The end should be standard education not certificates. Those who advocate for new schools in Benue should rather advocate for more funding to the existing ones. More schools for now will only complicate the current educational crisis.. We should remember that Salaries have to be paid and that is not the situation right now.
